Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, Bhai Tika, or Bhau Beej, is a Hindu festival celebrated two days after Diwali, on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika. It is a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, similar to Raksha Bandhan but with its own unique rituals and traditions.
During Bhai Dooj, sisters pray for the long and prosperous life of their brothers, and brothers vow to protect their sisters. Sisters perform aarti (a ritual of waving lighted wicks in front of the brother), apply a tika (a mark on the forehead), and offer sweets to their brothers. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters as a token of love and appreciation.
